What is the plot of “Re:monster”?

A story of a reincarnated monster (Re:monster) which started on one lucky day when our protagonist was asked out by a co-worker (female) for drinks,

after drinking and dropping her back home protagonist went back to buy more drinks.

When he was returning back home after buying himself a few more drinks a girl he considered his sister (but she was a stalker) stabbed him to death,

yup!

that’s how our protagonist died no truck-kun, no god smiting the life out by mistake, just a cute yandere girl stabbing multiple times and canceling his subscription of life.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story.

After dying,

our protagonist opened his eyes and found himself in a cave, surrounded by many baby goblins and he was one of them.

A grampa goblin named him Goburou, and thus marked the beginning of a myth, a being who can challenge the gods, a Re: monster.

Except for dying from the hands of a yandere (which many of you may find a worthy death),

you may think there is nothing new, dying and reincarnating in a world of magic as a monster that’s not a new concept for a manga right.

It’s not always the concept, but the good execution that makes a story and plots interesting. Let’s take a look at a few things that you may like about the plot of Re:monster:

Pacing

The flow/speed of the story is quite good,

except for 1st few chapters which are basically info-dumping chapters where you learn about the world, the protagonist, how his skills work and some grinding, there was nothing with the pacing that seemed wrong.

Goburou was leveling up fast, the world around him was changing at a decent speed, and whenever the plot started to become slow few good action scenes spiced things up and bought the pacing back on track.

Side Character

From simple-minded goblins to becoming powerhouse ogres the development of side characters is also executed in a very decent manner,

not just their power but also their way of thinking and taking actions had its own arc.

Reading these minor changes in a side character you are seeing from the very 1st chapter is amusing in its own way.

Art work

What’s the point of reading a visual comic if you’re not even liking its art? right.

Don’t worry the art of Re:monster is good enough to enjoy it for quite a few hours.

There are many wow moments (mostly from the fights) that will make you praise the mangaka a few times.

Even if you are not a particular fan of the style of art used in this manga you’ll still be going to enjoy it because it doesn’t feel like the unfinished product and if you give it enough read who knows maybe it’ll grow on you.

(Note: most of the time it’s not the art that is of bad quality, but the page uploaded by the translation team.)

Things you should know before starting Re:Monster

1. The Genre

You may see tags like Action, Adventure, Drama, Harem, or Romance in this manga,

but

Re:monster manga actually is a pure kingdom-building genre manga

everything comes under the sub-tag category (if that is a word :).

So, before you start it you should know although there is a good amount of fight and adventure, it’s all part of kingdom-building and you should be ready for info-dumping, politics, and clan management stuff.

2. The Protagonist

Though Goburou just gets stronger and stronger as the story progresses,

you (readers) should know that in the beginning he was born in one of the weakest races- Goblin,

so he does everything to survive for one more day.

In the process of surviving, he may do everything pleasant or cruel to gain more power.

Goburou in the initial arcs uses many underhand tactics, he’s ruthless and makes sure his enemy is as good as roasted chicken.

Goburo became a bit kind and less cruel (he sometimes gives second chance (Sometimes)) in the later arcs as he becomes quite a powerhouse and influential.

3. The Content

Let GeekWizard put it as straight as possible, it contains mature content

which means Re:monster may deal with a few sensitive topics.

The protagonist himself is not scum, but he is also not the only character in the manga.

So, if you just want to read a light heart slice-of-life or action webtoon/manga with no such content then you should browse for something else,

and

those who still want to give this manga a try don’t worry those content is not the core driver of the plot and just barely contributes 0.5% to the plot.

Summary

Goburou (The Protagonist)

  • He Kills so don’t worry if you are worried about if this protagonist believes in giving second chance or not. Although, depending on the situation he does give second chance but he makes their death a bit more painful if they don’t learn from their previous mistake.
  • He’s stronger than most of the enemies he faces. (on his way to become OP)
  • He started valuing relationships in the later chapters, be they romantic, subordinate, or political. In the starting few chapters he didn’t give a truck(tr=f) to anyone else and only thinks about his own survival.

Art

  • Most of the time artwork is good and doesn’t disturb your reading.
  • Art in the fights is the best in Re:monster manga series
  • Overall its a manga with good artwork.

Plot

  • The plot mainly focuses on kingdom-building.
  • Pace by which plot moves is good.
  • There are lot of info-dumping chapters in the initial arcs.
  • The plot contains a few sensitive topics, though they are in very few chapters and don’t even contribute 0.5% to the plot, but, they are there. You have been warned.

Conclusion

So, should you read Re:monster or not? Well, before we tell you that try to answer the question given below.

(Rule: every time you answer YES give yourself a +1 score.)

  • Are you looking for a Kingdom-building story with OP protagonist?
    • Yes
    • No
  • You like ruthless MCs?
    • Yes
    • No
  • You are ok with a few pure Info-dumping chapters?
    • Yes
    • No
  • You are ok with a plot with a few sensitive topics (less than 0.5%)?
    • Yes
    • No
  • You read this whole review that’s why you know what to do?
    • Yes- I’m a cultivator, I read the whole scroll.
    • No- I jumped directly to the conclusion.

There is no right manga and no best manga, gold for someone can be a simple metal for others, and

only a pencil for someone can be a weapon for someone,

just like that a great read for someone can be total trash for others.

With that said if you have scored 3 or more in the above Q and A then you can give Re:monster manga a try, it will keep you entertained for a few hours.

Important talk: Be proud of what you read mangas, manhwas, manhuas, and WN/LN(s) are the beautiful gifts in this stressful life if you don’t want to read a certain type of stuff then just don’t read, read what calms your stress not increases it. Just because 3000 people liked it doesn’t mean you’ll too.

Happy Reading 🙂
